A Course in Miracles brings into consciousness a requirement for awakening that has not been fully understood until now. Because the awakened state is the awareness of the perfect Oneness of Creation, it is impossible to know reality while seeing oneself as a separate, or even an individual part of Creation. The journey of awakening then is a shift in intention from valuing separation in any regard, to welcoming the awareness of Oneness in every thought. There is nothing in our present ego perception that will allow this to happen. A learning of an entirely different way of thinking is necessary whose purpose and goal is to remember our unified Oneness. This is a major shift in consciousness, and one that gradually occurs as we learn to find and value the joy of our shared unity in place of the conflict we now experience in being different.
A Course in Miracles is a three-book volume of teaching, consisting of Text, Workbook For Students, and the Manual For Teachers. It was dictated to Helen Schucman, a Doctor of Psychology and a Professor of Medical Psychology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, in what she describes as “a rapid, inner dictation.” This dictation took seven years between l965 and l972. The source of this dictation quickly becomes obvious to a reader as one who was once known as Jesus, yet not as the Jesus that Christianity made. This is the understanding that was evolving for him when he was in physical form and now is being given to us as a more complete teaching. When we think of the effect of just his beginning acceptance of this understanding has had upon this world, perhaps we may be encouraged to learn as he did.
The essential teaching of the Course is of the reality of our inherent Oneness, of being whole and complete, despite the appearances of our fears and frailties. God indeed has one Son and that is all of God’s Creation knowing Itself as One. In the movement from illusion to reality, there is a transitional level the Course calls the “real” world where greater love, peace and joy are experienced. To our present awareness, this would be what is known as enlightenment. This is what is available to all who seek and are willing to change their mind about how they see themselves and each other. The Course offers us a practice of how to experience this awareness now.
“This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.”
“This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:”
